What? Get a J. Crew “Like” outfit for less than $13, how is that possible? Well, actually I’ve been chomping at the bit to share this with you for several days so let me lay it all out. The other day I was looking through some fashion magazines wishing I could go clothes shopping when a brilliant idea popped into my head. What if I went shopping at a thrift store to see if I could find an outfit like something in one of the magazines? Genius, right? If not genius, then definitely challenging.
I know, I know…some of you may be turning your noses up to the idea of buying anything second hand, but let me try to convince you otherwise…that is unless you have a boat-load of dispensable cash in which case you don’t need to be reading this. However, if you’re like me and you’re “bananas” over clothes but you don’t have an endless supply of funds, then thrift-store shopping is the perfect solution. Besides, technically anything found at a thrift store is “vintage” and who doesn’t love vintage, right? So call it whatever you like…but to me, saving money is always in fashion. Just as a note though, this does not mean I don’t shop for new products. On the contrary, I like to mix my shopping between new and used as I think there are certain times when new is necessary and others when previously owned is perfectly fine.
Pictured in the magazine above is an outfit I chose from the current J. Crew catalog to see if I could duplicate it at a thrift store. After shopping at only one thrift store, I found the above “look-alike” outfit within one hour. Pretty good, eh? Obviously the sweater and shirt are not identical as my sweater is a cable knit and the strips and collar on my shirt are a bit different than the ad, but I have to give myself a huge pat on the back because I think this is pretty damn close!
But let me give you the best news of all. The outfit pictured in the J. Crew catalog would cost you $252.00 before taxes and shipping. My outfit cost $12.97 total. That’s a savings of over $240.00 if you factor in the tax and shipping!!! Isn’t that amazing? Obviously I didn’t do the best job of modeling as I can’t really emulate the skinny waif look with pouty lips like the model above, but all in all I think it’s pretty good. And I’m all for saving $240.00 plus! And since the outfit cost so little, I got this bag for $10.97. I know, the bag cost almost as much as the outfit…but when you consider the whole thing cost less than it would to have a meal and a drinks, (by yourself), at a sit down restaurant…I’m thinking it was okay to buy a bag at that price.
So…let me know what you think. Do you want to see more posts like this?
PS…just to be clear, none of the items pictured here are actually J. Crew…they just look like J. Crew. And in my opinion, that makes this experiment that much better!
