Painted Glass With a Marbled Look

Years ago I made Christmas ornaments with this method in red and white paints which I still hang on my tree.  So when I was taking down the holiday decorations the other day, I thought why not try it with a vase.  For that matter, you could do it with pretty much anything you’d like to add a little color to.  If you’re a bride looking for an inexpensive way to brighten up your table arrangements, this might be a good option as they turn out really pretty, they’re really unique and best of all, they don’t cost much to make but a little bit of time.  Here’s what you’ll need.

2 or more colors of paint – Acryllic or Stained Glass (I chose Stained Glass for this project)

Glass vase, mason jar or other piece of glass

Plastic cup or container you don’t mind getting paint on

Clear spray lacquer

Paper towels

Paper to cover work area or craft area

Painted Glass 1

Step 1:  Pour each color of paint into the bottom of your glass container.  I try to get each color side by side as opposed to right on top of each other that way your colors don’t mix so much and you’ll get more of a marbled look.

Step 2:  Tilt the glass container from side to side and let the paint swirl in different patterns to cover the glass.  When most of the base is covered, carefully roll the paint around the inside rim of the glass.  Then turn the glass upside down into a plastic cup or other container to let the excess paint drip out.

Step 3:  Check the container frequently to make sure there’s not too much paint accumulating around the rim.  Try not to touch the paint on the inside otherwise you’ll disturb the marbled patterns, but make sure you remove any paint that may accidentally get on the outside of the container.

Step 4:  Once you’re confident most of the excess paint has been emptied, turn the container right side up and place it in a dry, warm area.  Read the instructions on your paint container for drying time. I left mine undisturbed for a few days to dry.  Once the inside of your container is dry, spray a water based lacquer over the painted area to protect it, especially if you plan to put any kind of liquid inside.

Painted Glass 8

And that’s it!  Now you have some beautiful new glass pieces that look quite expensive, but only cost you a few dollars to make.  Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone 😉

Have a Fab You Bliss day!

xoxo

Stephanie

Brilliant. I’ve done this a ton of times with ornaments but it never occurred to me to do it with anything else.

I am trying this on a lamp glob Before it was too bright and I’m trying to see if this will soften things a bit. I just don’t know what the heat from the light is going to do. guess I;ll find out!
