Love Burlap? Then You Will Love These Napkin Ring DIY Tutorials

Last week I posted a tutorial on how to make a woven burlap table runner. This week, since I had so much left over material, I though I’d keep with the table set-up theme and post a few napkin ring tutorials using burlap as well.

Honestly, I have so many ideas for burlap napkin rings that this tutorial could go on forever, but here are just a few of my favorites.

#1 Beaded Burlap Napkin Ring

Supplies needed

Burlap

Assorted size beads

Sewing machine

Scissors

Hand sewing needle

Thread

Tape Measure

Step 1:  Measure and cut your burlap to be 7.5 inches in length and 2.5 inches in width.

Step 2:  Fold 1/4 of an inch around all edges and sew a straight stitch to prevent fraying.

Step 3:  Thread your hand sewing needle and insert your first bead at the length-width intersection of your machine sewn stitch. You can see where I started on the left side of the burlap in the image below.

Step 4:  Place and stitch down once side a random pattern of different size and color beads in groupings that are pleasing to you. Stop adding beads about an 1.5 inch before you reach the end of your burlap.

Step 5:  Repeat on the other side.

Step 6:  Fold top end over bottom end and hand stitch together. If you prefer, you can use some fabric glue to bind the ends together instead.

Step 7:  Add some beads to your folded over area to complete and finish the look

And there you have it…your first napkin ring done!

#2 Braided Burlap Napkin Ring

Supplies needed

Burlap

Embroidery floss

Sewing machine

Scissors

Small office clip

Small plastic storage container

Tape Measure

Fabric glue

Step 1:  Take 3 pieces of embroidery floss per desired color and cut them at 8″ in length. Tie them together with a regular knot. This means you will have 3 pieces per color for a total of 9 strings total.

Step 2:  Use an office clip to secure your knotted embroidery floss somewhere so you can braid it. I use a small plastic storage container as shown below

Step 3:  Braid your 3 colors of embroidery floss together.

Step 4:  Tie a regular knot at the other end when you’ve completed your braid.

Step 5:  Measure and cut your burlap at 7.5″ length and 2″ width.

Step 6:  Insert one end of embroidery floss into top of the under side of your burlap and fold all four edges over at 1/2″ and machine sew a straight stitch.

Step 7:  Repeat process for two more burlap & embroidery floss pieces. Machine sew all three piece together at the top with a straight stitch.

Step 8:  Braid pieces together and machine sew bottom end together with a straight stitch.

Step 9:  Hand sew or use fabric glue to bind the two end pieces together to form a ring. If your stitching is unsightly, use a small, clean piece of burlap to fold and glue over your stitching.

#3 Flower Applique Burlap Napkin Ring

Supplies Needed

Burlap

Flower applique

Sewing machine

Scissors

Hand sewing needle

Thread

Tape Measure

Fabric glue

Follow steps 1 & 2 of the Beaded Burlap Napkin Ring above.

Step 3:  Place some fabric glue on the backside of your fabric flower applique.

Step 4:  Glue flower to your stitched burlap piece.

Step 5:   Fold top end over bottom end and hand stitch together. If you prefer, you can use some fabric glue to bind the ends together instead.

Repeat process for the desired number of rings you need for your setting and you are done!

All burlap used in this post came from BurlapFabric.com

Gorgeous Napkin Rings! Your tutorial is s easy to follow – Thank you for posting it online. I had a quick question for you though, where did you find that flower ? I have been looking everywhere and I cannot seem to locate anything with a reasonable price.

Hi Eunice – I’m glad you like the tutorial. I bought the flower from Michael’s Crafts Supply back in November or December 2011. I’m pretty sure it was in the scrap booking or jewelry making section. Hope this helps.

Hi Kim – Thanks for the comment. I’m glad you like the napkin rings, they were a lot of fun to make and even more to use. We just used them over the weekend during the holiday’s BBQs. I got the beads at Michael’s Craft Supply. They’re just listed as crafting beads. Hope this helps!

Thank you. The beads weren’t the really small ones, but the next size up. Ones that a regular sized sewing needle could fit through.
