As the title states, this is probably the cutest thing I’ve ever made with felt. I LOVE it! I got the idea from the cover of this month’s Country Living, which has a felt sunflower pillow adorably displayed on a couch. When I got the magazine my eyes immediately went to the pillow and I said, “I’m going to make that”. So…here it is, I made it
If you’d like to make one too, here’s what you’ll need.
Yellow/Gold felt
Scissors
19″ x 19″ Pillow
Sewing machine
All purpose pins
Fabric glue
Hand sewing needle
Contrasting yellow fabric
Step 1: Cut one piece of felt 19.5 inches by 19.5 inches to make a square. This will be the pillow front piece. For the back pieces, cut two 19.5 by 11 inch pieces.
Step 2: Trace and cut the size petal you’d like from a piece of paper to use as your pattern. I cut two different sizes to give the petals some size variation. Cut about 75 to 80 petals.
Step 3: Pin and sew the outer petals over lapping them in varying patterns. (Note, if you’re not a sewer, you can use fabric glue to glue the petals on if you like.) I can sew faster than I can glue so I chose to sew it. Repeat layers of petals, placing and sewing your way into the center.
Step 4: For the center, cut small pieces of your yellow contrasting fabric. Run some fabric glue on the inside of each piece and roll into pieces into the glue like the ones below.
Step 5: String the yellow pieces with a needle and thread so its easy to position them on your pillow.
Step 6: Sew the front and back pieces of your pillow together, but make sure to pin the ends of the outer petals in towards the center so you don’t sew them into the seam of the pillow.
Step 7: Turn pillow right side out and place over your pillow. Position your contrasting yellow pieces in the center with some fabric glue and you’re done.
And there you have it…a super cute new sunflower pillow!
As always, if you have any questions please leave a comment or send me an email.

SO cute!
Oh my goodness – you know I love it!!! You are so talented friend
Thank you! You know this is in YOUR bedroom, right?
Oh it is!!! It’s the perfect touch for the “Jessica Frey” bedroom at the Saul B&B
I can’t see where you sewed it! Did you just do the very bottom of the petals, like tacking it on? This is absolutely adorable!! Oh, and where did you get the felt? That color is gorgeous!
Yep, I just sewed a line around the top of each row of petals so the next row were placed right on top. I got the felt at a local fabric store, but it’s just a regular gold felt. The lighting in our guest room where I photographed the pillow is very bright so it makes the color look a bit lighter. Thanks for the comment, I’m so glad you like the pillow!

that looks SO Adorable! you are so talented – if i tried to make this, it would NEVER come out that way
Two things I don’t understand- Why 2 back pieces, and you only say to sew the first row on. How do you put the rest of the rows on??
Please see step # 3 “Repeat layers of petals, placing and sewing your way into the center.”
The back two piece are for the back of the pillow. You need to sew them to the front piece and turn it inside out, just as the tutorial states in step #6 “Sew the front and back pieces of your pillow together, but make sure to pin the ends of the outer petals in towards the center so you don’t sew them into the seam of the pillow.”

I would love to try this. I also sew faster than glue but I’m wondering where did you sew? Did you use a continuous run around the square?
Hi Denise – If you look at the picture below step #3, I sewed one continuous circle around the inside top of the petal about where the top of the pins are. Then place the next row of petals right over your stitching and repeat until you get to the center. Then cover the center stitching with the fabric rolls. And that’s it! Have fun
Oh yes…I’m going to post another felt pillow in the coming weeks so be sure to check back.

Hey! Love this so much that I’ve made my own version of this in purple with more petals and a button in the middle but when I stand it up the petals fall forward.. did you use fabric glue on this to keep them in place at all? I’m thinking I’m going to have to.. thanks for the insperation Leanne ♥
Hi Leanne! Thanks so much for the comment. I’m glad you like the pillow and a purple version sounds fantastic! I only used fabric glue on the petals closest to the center and all petals lay flat. When you say “When I stand it up” do you mean when you prop it up on a couch or on a bed? If so, you might have too many petals. Or maybe your felt isn’t heavy enough. Either way a little fabric glue here and there will fix the situation
Glad you like the pillow and thanks for following!!!
So copying this! XO
cute to make
Hello,
First I love this idea but how much fabric do you suggest
Thanks Leighanna! Two yards would probably be good
great looking pillow – I am envisioning it in red or white with a contrasting or glittery center for Christmas!
Just made this for my daughter who is leaving for college next week. Love it!! Thanks for this tutorial!
Awesome…so glad you like it!
Hi there. Would you consider doing a video tutorial for this? I’m a visual learning and even thought you have pictures and instructions, I think I’d probably get it faster to see you doing it.
Hi Amy – Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately I’m not set up to do video tutorials. But this pillow is really easy. Just follow the steps and you shouldn’t have a problem. Have a great night!

This will be my first diy project I have ever done so I need alittle help. Can you help me with what sizes the petals should be?
Hi Cassandra – Great! I believe my petals were about 2.5 to 3 inches in length and maybe about 2 inches at the widest part of the petal. I say cut a few different sizes and see what look you like best. Good luck and have fun!!!
Am going to make this, but in burgundy. I collect vintage brooches and will use one for the centre. Thanks for posting!
love it
