My Dream Closet + Ways To Make Shopping Your Own Closet Easier

Like a lot of women, it’s always been a dream of mine to have a huge walk-in closet where everything is organized and of course…pretty looking. Such a room would have to be set up so as soon as I walked in I would be inspired by what I already own instead of feeling like I have nothing to wear. I mean, who wouldn’t want a space like that, right?

Design Darling

Yes, I have a lot of specific wants for this room and until recently I thought this dream would stay just that. I mean, you can’t really make a dream closet when your current closet is tiny, right?

Then one day a few weeks ago I realized, “Hey…I’m already using the closet space in a spare bedroom for clothes, why don’t I turn the entire room into my “dream closet”?”

So that’s exactly what I’m doing! Exciting, huh? I’ve been working on it for a few days now and you know I will be sharing the progress with you as soon as I can.

For now…here’s some closet inspiration in the form of one Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and The City! Isn’t it beautiful?

Carrie Bradshaw’s closet via I Could Have That

One of the top reasons for wanting a nice organized closet, at least for me is so I can “shop” my own closet. Yup, for me…when things are un-organized, I have a hard time finding anything and frustration usually ends up making me pull out the white flag and give up. But there are a few easy steps anyone can take to make it easier to shop your own closet, no matter what size it is.

1. Make sure all your hangers are the same

T&L Huggable Hanger Manufactuer

I’m sure you’ve heard this piece of advice before and if you have any doubts, don’t. Believe me, making sure all your hangers are the same really does make a difference because everything hanging in your closet is the same height from the bar, there’s less of a chance for hangers to get caught on each other and it’s less distracting than having a bunch of different colors and sizes. Hangers like the velvet ones above are great, but if you don’t have the money to spend on all new hangers, go through the ones you have and edit out ones that don’t match. This way you’ll only have to buy a few to make your closet hangers all one kind.

2. Organize your clothes by type, color or both

Stylists in the City

This is key to being able to “shop your closet”. I mean, when you go out shopping you don’t see everything all clumped together, do you? No, store designers arrange their products in a pleasing way in order to entice you into buying. So you should do the same in your own closet. I like the way the clothes are organized in the closet above. With everything arranged by type and color, you can easily find what you’re looking for and be inspired to create styles you may not have the patience for if your closet was a mess.

3. Make sure you do some “Spring Cleaning” year round

If you’re constantly editing your closet, you won’t have to do as big of job once a year. I recommend donating to Goodwill at least four times a year. At the beginning of each season seems to work best for me, by getting rid of anything I did not wear during the three months of the prior season. If you have trouble figuring out what needs to go, try the reverse hanger trick.

Becoming Minimalist

Arrange all your clothes to hang in your closet with the hangers facing away from you like shown above. Then, as you wear pieces, return them to your closet with the hanger facing the correct direction. At the end of three months, whatever is hanging in your closet with the hanger still facing away should go to Goodwill.

And that’s it. A few simple ways to make shopping your own closet a lot easier.

Hope this post was inspirational. Be sure to check back to see updates for my closet room make-over. It’s going to be fun!

How exciting! A closet room sounds perfect. Right now we have the biggest closet I have ever had but it was poorly installed so it doesn’t really make the most used of the space. Eventually I hope to do a closet makeover too to maximize space! My husband makes fun of me for having my clothes organized by sleeve length and color but it really does make things so much easier to find!

I organize my closet by shirt length and colors as well…I think it’s the BEST way to know where everything is 🙂
