How To Turn A Special Object Like A Vintage Skeleton Key Into A Sentimental Signature Necklace

When my mom put her house on the market a few months ago, (the house my brother, sister and I grew up in), my heart sunk a little. So many memories were tied up in that house and it was kind of sad to think it would no longer be a place where we could all gather and celebrate or just go to visit. Of course, that’s kind of selfish, right? I mean, I don’t live there anymore and my mom and her husband want to embark on some new adventures, so this really has nothing to do with me.

Anyhow, as planned the house just sold a couple of weeks ago…waaa! I know, crazy huh?

But as with all change comes amazing opportunities. So putting aside any feelings of attachment, I’m really happy for my mom and this new adventure :-)

For me…surprisingly enough, one amazing opportunity came my way as well. In the form of the beauty below.

This china cabinet is probably about 120 years old and has been in the family for as long as I can remember. So when my mom said they were just going to sell it…I couldn’t bare the thought and instead took it myself. Well…The Hubby and I took it that is ;-)

It needs a little TLC, but not a problem…that’s what I do, right?

From as far back as I can remember my sister Suzi and I used to play with the skeleton key that opens this china cabinet. And I’m seriously surprised we didn’t lose, swallow or somehow break it. I mean, we were just kids…we didn’t know any better.

So when the cabinet was delivered from my mom’s house this past Friday and I pulled the taped key off the glass door, a flood of memories came rushing back and instantly I knew I wanted to turn it into a necklace. I mean, how special is it that I get to wear something so meaningful around my neck? I’m definitely in love with it!

Anyhow…do you have a skeleton key like this key you’d like to turn into a necklace too? Perhaps you have something else with a lot of memories, a ring, a broach or a charm. Even a newer key would work…as long as whatever it is has a way in which you can attach a jump ring to string your chain through. If you don’t have anything meaningful you want to turn into a necklace and you just want to make a skeleton key necklace for yourself, you can buy skeleton keys pretty much anywhere. Just type skeleton keys into a Google search. Even better, buy you can old ones at Flea Markets, Thrift Stores and Rummage Sales.

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Skeleton key (or anything meaningful)

Chain in metal of preference. (Mine is copper)

Wire cutters

Pliers

3 Jump Rings

1 Jewelry Clasp

Beads

HERE’S HOW TO MAKE IT

And here’s an Instagram shot of me wearing it.

I’m so in love with it!

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial! As always, thanks for stopping by!
