DIY Decorative Initial Made From Wine Corks

I started saving wine corks years ago because I knew I could always find something to make out of them. Eventually friends started saving them as well and every once in a while one of these friends will send me a special delivery in the form of a big bag of corks. Ah, it’s always nice to have friends who drink a lot of wine, huh?

So…there’s never a shortage of wine corks around here.

One of the projects I had floating around in my head to make with these corks was a decorative initial to hang in our kitchen near where we keep our wine.

So that’s what I did.

Here’s what you’ll need to make one of these yourself.

SUPPLIES

Corks
Glue
All purpose pins
Ribbon
(Optional) Letter template

DIRECTIONS

Step One: Gather corks and arrange in whatever shape letter you’ve chosen.

I used a letter template I cut out of an old piece of poster board so I could place the corks in the exact shape I wanted. If you’re good at eye-balling and don’t need a template, go ahead without one.

Step Two: Hopefully some of your corks will have different colors on the tops from the various wine in the bottles they came from. Some of my corks came from white wine bottles and some came from red wine bottles, so I have a range of plain corks and corks with red or pink tops. Maybe all of your corks will be in shades or red and pink or maybe yours will be a combo like mine. But whatever colored corks you have, arrange them in a pattern that appeals to you.

For mine, since I only had a few dark red ones, I made sure they were spaced evenly throughout the letter so there was more of an even look.

Step Three: Once you have your corks arranged how you want, now it’s time to start gluing them together. Use whatever kind of glue you like and simply glue the sides of the corks together starting from one side through to the end. In order to keep the corks closely together, I used All-Purpose pins to keep the corks together as the glue sealed.

Step Four: (Optional) Once your corks are glued together and you’ve let it dry completely, wrap and glue a complimentary ribbon around the bottom base of your corks to give it an accented look.
