Historic Hearn House Wedding

Katie and Dylan’s Hearn House wedding was like a pleasant trip back to a simpler time. The couple became man and wife on the grounds of this beautiful historic home built in 1911, nestled among the urban streets of downtown Phoenix, Arizona. Their day was filled with vintage inspired DIY details, from the intricate lace detailing on the back of Katie’s dress to the vintage buttons that decorated the burlap bands around their centerpieces.

With photography by Ryan & Denise Photography, the happy coupe’s day was a lovely garden party, complete with delicious BBQ and mason jar glasses decorated with the symbol of a vintage tandem bike. Southern charm filled the grass-covered yard, dotted with white linen tablecloths. Guests laughed and chatted under twinkle lights, relishing in the love, grace and charm, and it really did seem as if they all traveled back to an easier time.

From the bride:

We met at work, dated a year before we got engaged, then got married 5 later. The night Dylan asked me to marry him I was looking for a pair of gloves to wear on a trip back to Kansas. Dylan said he bought me a pair of gloves, “They’re in the suitcase if you wanted to see them”. The engagement ring was the ring finger of one of the gloves. He then got down on one knee and proposed.

We loved everything about our wedding! It was in Arizona, outdoors, simple, country with a streak of vintage. It was relaxed as we wanted it to flow freely. Lights were strung up, beautiful flowers and plants were in bloom and the yard was green. Light pink hydrangeas in over sized ball jars were placed on clean, white table cloths to keep a crisp, garden feel. Each table had a picture frame, candle votive, or some small vintage piece. Wedding favors were carefully placed at each table – a mason jar with handle printed with “Dylan & Katie, April 27, 2013” in green with an image of a vintage, tandem bike.

The bridal party flowers were astounding with a mix of coral, cream, blush and dusty miller garden roses mixed in. And the men’s boutonnieres were simple cream roses. I wore a vintage looking ivory sleeveless dress, silk taffeta with lace from the waist up, see-through in the back with a v-neck front. There were buttons on waistband in back, a long train and it had pockets! And I wore light mint/aqua satin heels.

Dylan wore a black tux with an ivory vest to match me. Three bridesmaids wore light coral knee length dresses and two bridesmaids wore darker coral, full length dresses. They were all over the shoulder, which tied the colors nicely. Groomsmen wore black tuxes with black vests for a very sharp, clean look. The flower girl’s dress was made to match the mine, but with a scoop neckline and no train. And the ring bearer wore a black tux with an ivory vest, to match the Dylan.

My uncle came from Kansas to marry us. He married my older sister 13 years earlier, so it made it very special for all of us. Family and friends came in from Tennessee, Kansas, Texas, Missouri, Florida and northern Arizona to attend the wedding. The ceremony was a traditional Christian ceremony. A friend sang “Love Never Fails” by Brandon Heath, during the ceremony. Rudy’s BBQ catered the dinner with a selection of meats, potato salad, beans and condiments. Lemonade and tea were served. Soft music was played in the background during the reception with the sun setting as dinner was served. And a three tiered cake with the look of lace stepping down each tier looked beautiful!

While planning, I was inspired by vintage looks, simple, clean, crisp – I didn’t want anything over-done and nothing too matched. I was inspired by bringing together different looks, textures, and decor to make it flow. I must give huge props to my dear friend Elisabeth for helping with the look and planning. I had so many favorite moments! There was a chicken that walked across the porch while I standing with my dad waiting to walk down the aisle. And looking at the man I would be married to for the rest of my life while we took our vows was a pretty amazing feeling.

My advice to other brides – savor every moment – it goes by fast! Have a wedding videographer, there’s so much you miss because you can’t be everywhere and see everything on your big day.

We LOVED our wedding pictures, they were absolutely amazing. The biggest thing past brides stressed to me was to get a great photographer. Because after all is said and done, the memories in your mind and heart will be sustained by the pictures forever.

Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Ashley – Katie actually had her dress custom made, but it was patterned after a Watters gown that you can check out here: http://watters.com/Product/WattersBrides/7074B/ Hope that helps!
