Like many people, my husband and I are food lovers. And wherever we travel, we make sure to check out the best restaurants, always looking for places with Michelin Star ratings and James Beard Award-winning chefs. So I’m sure you can imagine how fun it was to receive this submission, as the groom, Tory McPhail, is the executive chef at Commanders Palace in New Orleans and a recipient of the James Beard Award. Another fun aspect of this couple is their engagement. While on a work trip to Australia as a culinary ambassador on behalf of the American Chef Corps, a government diplomacy initiative to encourage cultural exchange through food, Tory proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Britt Nelson. Their engagement story can be seen on Martha Stewart Weddings. How fab is that?
Photographed by Priscilla Thomas Photography and held at Tybee Island Wedding Chapel in Georgia, it was a perfect venue featuring a quaint chapel and exquisite ballroom. For the design of their wedding, they pulled inspiration from their Southern roots and Australian adventure. Family style tables made for an intimate atmosphere below gorgeous hanging chandeliers while soft blush and neutral hues were displayed in the floral designs and linens to create a light and airy aesthetic. The peonies were in full, voluptuous bloom and were highlighted in tablescapes as well as the chapel aisles.
Some of their New Orleans crew crafted delicious cuisine that included lobster, pulled pork, and caviar among the spread. And the guests’ favors were handmade miniature clay flower vases. Other personal details included Britt wearing a garter in which Tory’s grandmother’s and mother’s wedding rings were tied onto the fabric. And the couple paid homage to NOLA with a Second Line during the reception. Britt and Tory held uniquely crafted umbrella and guests followed their lead twirling their mint colored fabric napkins in the air. As their dream Southern wedding came to a close, guests bid the newlyweds adieu in a sea of sparklers before the couple was whisked away in a vintage Rolls Royce.
