Throwback Thursday: How To Make Shamballa Bracelets

Since we have so many great DIY tutorials in the archives, I thought why not jump on the TBT bandwagon with this fab past feature on How To Make Shamballa Bracelets.

These little beauties are easy to make and with no limit to colors, bead type, and the length you can make them…they’re oh-so fun to wear

Here’s what you’ll need:

Hemp cording or strong yarn
Beads
Beading cement
Tape measure
Scissors

Step 1: Determine the size bracelet you want. In this tutorial I made a single bracelet, a double wrap, and a triple wrap. For the single bracelet, measure your wrist to determine how long your base strand needs to be. Mine is 7″, however you need to add a extra yarn for your first knot and your last knot. Therefore I cut my base cord at 10 inches. For a double wrap I would make it 17 inches and a triple wrap 24 inches. Remember, your sizes may be different depending on the size of your wrist. So be sure to measure.

Now hop on over to the original tutorial for the rest of the “how to”.

How To Make A Pretty & Unique Ombre Bead & Chain Bracelet Like This One

For a while now, I’ve had this chain and these beads in my craft room. But until few days ago, I really didn’t know what I was going to make out of them. Then while working on a different project this past Saturday, a light bulb went off and instantly I knew the supplies were meant to become this bracelet!

Here’s what you’ll need to get the job done.

Supplies
A long strand of wide link chain at least 21 inches in length. Measure your wrist, add 1/2 inch & times it by 3 to get the exact length.
Beads in 3 color shades to create an “Ombre” look
Beading Thread
Beading Needle
Ribbon

If you don’t already have these supplies, you should be able to find them at any craft supply store. Suggestion…if you can’t find the exact style of chain and beads that I have here, no biggie…just use something similar. There are all kinds of wide link chains and beads out there. Just get something you like and you’ll be golden 😉

Even though making this bracelet is really quite easy, photographing it step by step was not and explaining it is a little lengthy. So bare with me.

Step One: Cut a fairly long strand of beading thread. Then cut three separate strands of your chain, all equal in length. Mine were 7 inches long. But you should measure your wrist and add 1/2 inch to see what an appropriate length should be for you.

The easiest way I can describe how to do this is it’s kind of like hand sewing. However instead of stitching down and through material, you’ll be stitching through a bead and down and through a chain. So yeah…you’ll be sewing a bracelet.

Step Two: Leaving the first link empty, pull your beading thread through your first bead then down and around the connecting point of the next link. You may want to make a couple of passes around the link with your thread to make sure your bead is secure. Repeat the process all the way down the chain stitching each bead into place on your chain. Leave the last link empty. Remember, it’s important to stitch the beads into place so they’re secure, so don’t be shy about making a few passes through each link.

Step Three: Now you’re going to attach your second chain strand by sewing each link side to the next strand link and sew your next color beads in the same way as in step two. The stitch will go, 1. pass through bead, 2. pass around connecting link, 3. pass over, under and back through to attach side by side chain strands together. Then repeat for the entire second color.

Don’t worry if your pattern of stitching the sides together isn’t exactly like mine, you can stitch them together however you like. The important thing is to make sure your beads and chains are secure together and you follow the same pattern of stitching all the way through. When you are finished you will be able to see some of the beading thread, so you want it to look even.

Step Four: Repeat the steps above for your third chain strand.

Step Five: Cut a 3 to 4 inch length of ribbon and weave it through the empty link slots at each end of your bracelet.

Step Six: Slip the bracelet on your wrist and tie the ribbon in a bow. It’s easiest if you have someone else tie the bow 😉

Again, it really is super easy once you get into the swing of it.

Hope you enjoy it!

How To Turn A Special Object Like A Vintage Skeleton Key Into A Sentimental Signature Necklace

When my mom put her house on the market a few months ago, (the house my brother, sister and I grew up in), my heart sunk a little. So many memories were tied up in that house and it was kind of sad to think it would no longer be a place where we could all gather and celebrate or just go to visit. Of course, that’s kind of selfish, right? I mean, I don’t live there anymore and my mom and her husband want to embark on some new adventures, so this really has nothing to do with me.

Anyhow, as planned the house just sold a couple of weeks ago…waaa! I know, crazy huh?

But as with all change comes amazing opportunities. So putting aside any feelings of attachment, I’m really happy for my mom and this new adventure 🙂

For me…surprisingly enough, one amazing opportunity came my way as well. In the form of the beauty below.

This china cabinet is probably about 120 years old and has been in the family for as long as I can remember. So when my mom said they were just going to sell it…I couldn’t bare the thought and instead took it myself. Well…The Hubby and I took it that is 😉

It needs a little TLC, but not a problem…that’s what I do, right?

From as far back as I can remember my sister Suzi and I used to play with the skeleton key that opens this china cabinet. And I’m seriously surprised we didn’t lose, swallow or somehow break it. I mean, we were just kids…we didn’t know any better.

So when the cabinet was delivered from my mom’s house this past Friday and I pulled the taped key off the glass door, a flood of memories came rushing back and instantly I knew I wanted to turn it into a necklace. I mean, how special is it that I get to wear something so meaningful around my neck? I’m definitely in love with it!

Anyhow…do you have a skeleton key like this key you’d like to turn into a necklace too? Perhaps you have something else with a lot of memories, a ring, a broach or a charm. Even a newer key would work…as long as whatever it is has a way in which you can attach a jump ring to string your chain through. If you don’t have anything meaningful you want to turn into a necklace and you just want to make a skeleton key necklace for yourself, you can buy skeleton keys pretty much anywhere. Just type skeleton keys into a Google search. Even better, buy you can old ones at Flea Markets, Thrift Stores and Rummage Sales.

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Skeleton key (or anything meaningful)

Chain in metal of preference. (Mine is copper)

Wire cutters

Pliers

3 Jump Rings

1 Jewelry Clasp

Beads

HERE’S HOW TO MAKE IT

And here’s an Instagram shot of me wearing it.

I’m so in love with it!

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial! As always, thanks for stopping by!

A Stunning Turquoise & Gold DIY Statement Necklace

I’ve been thinking about this necklace for a few weeks now, but I’m just getting around to featuring it now.

Ahhh, I know, know…it’s terrible of me isn’t it? And it was just a matter of squeezing the “doing” of it into what have been some really busy days lately.

Of course, I don’t know why I waited so long now because the actual “making” of this took no time at all…I promise! Really, you could buy the materials, make it and wear it all within an hour or so. Now that’s a quick DIY!

And now I feel even more silly I didn’t do it earlier, sheesh!

But best of all…it’s really pretty too!!!

So…here’s what you’ll need.

10-12 Pre-drilled Turquoise stones of different sizes and shapes

Gold or clear bead thread

Wire cutters

Small gold chain

Small gold beads

Medium gold beads

2 jump rings

1 jewelry clasp

Hypo Cement

Directions

Step 1:  Gather your materials and arrange your stones how you want them to appear in line as your necklace.

Step 2:  Measure the length of necklace you want. I usually use another necklace I already have as my measure. For this one I used an old pearl necklace. Next, string your bead thread through the last stone on one side. Then pull the string through the end of your small gold chain. Tie a double knot with the bead thread to secure your thread to the chain and triple secure it with a few drops of Hypo Cement on the knot.

Step 3 :  Add small gold bead, medium gold bead and another small gold bead between first stone and next stone.

Step 4:  Repeat with remaining stones, alternating Turquoise stones and gold beads until you reach a length you like.

Step 5:  Tie bead thread to another section of your small gold chain. Add Hypo cement in the same way you did in step 2. Cut chain on both ends to the length of your choice. Add jump rings to both ends and jewelry clasp to one end.

And that’s it…you’re done. Step back and look at what a pretty statement necklace you have.

Now go out and show it off!!!

I love how versatile this necklace is. Here it is with a sweater and jeans looking fresh and fun…

…and here it is with a cute lavender strapless number if you’re looking for a night out.

Both look great, don’t you think?

As always, I’d love to hear your comments.

Thanks for stopping by!
