Making Use of Alcoves or Small Spaces with Design

With all the renovation and remodel we’ve got going on in our house pretty much all the time and all the STUFF I feel like we have, I’m all about making use of any area that would be good for storage or provide a spot for something needed and useful.

So…for this very reason, I pulled together some images to show how easy you can turn dead space into a valuable asset.

Here’s a great use of a wall that would otherwise just be used for pictures or whatnot. It’s always good to remember, whenever you are lacking in space, go up!

Here we have a great example of what to do with an unused closet…turn it into a mini-office, of course!

Whimages…The Blog

The space behind most stairs, especially in track homes or ones built mid-century, is the space is usually odd shaped or perhaps covered by drywall. Don’t just let it sit there being under appreciated, fix it up, tear out that drywall and expose the space for all the wonder it can provide.

A corner window like the one below without a built in window seat with storage like this one, is like a day without the sun…don’t let it happen 😉

Newer track homes have a lot of great features already built in like this entry area that was painted a different color than the rest of the room to make it look like it was a built in. Do you have a space like this? If so, give something like this a try.

Ahhh, yes…the tiny bathroom. We’ve all been in one, seen one or have one. And in such hateful rooms we can’t let a single piece of property go to waste. That’s why I love this side shelving below. It’s perfect for a small space like this.

This built in seating area on the other side of an island is a marvelous idea. It’s truly brilliant use of space!

Can you image what the space below would look like if this coat hanging, garb putting on and taking off, shoe central wasn’t here? If your image is anything like mine this room would look ugly! Thank heavens it doesn’t though.

Using a long bench for storage on top and underneath is always a great idea. It’s like bunk beds for your stuff 😉

And last but not least, if you have space on either side of your fireplace…flank it with book shelves. And don’t be afraid to get creative with how your book are positioned. They don’t always have to be straight up and down…just sayin’

Hee. I’ve had that small kitchen corner built-in image for a year now. It’s the inspiration for our kitchen/dining room remodel!

That’s funny Cris! I know we both have the same taste because just about everything I see you pin on Pinterest is something I would pin too 😉

Hi! Loving your site but I wanted to inform you that the nook with the seating area with the blue pillow that has a bird on it is actually in my family room and is from my blog whimages.blogspot.com. It’s listed as style estate. No worries, when I posted it I never put my sites name on the photo. Have a great day!

Hi Robyn – Thanks for the comment. Sorry for the slow reply, I’ve been off on vacation for a few weeks. Anyhow, that’s for the correction. It’s all fixed now. Have a great day!
